Summercamp Sound Check

Sound check felt more like a mini set today thanks to all the attendees. For those of you who couldn't make it, here is a 10 minute excerpt of some impromptu jahming. See you tomorrow!

The Trip There

"Glimpse" from The Trip There

We are pleased to announce a unique release on this fine Spring Monday. Several years ago a great friend of ours, Chris Mignanelli, approached Brendan about writing a soundtrack for a film he was making. Brendan happily obliged and began compiling songs and bits of music that had been swirling about in his head for the project. We then spent an afternoon in my studio recording those ideas and sent them over to see how the director felt about them. Next thing we knew we were watching a captivating love story set to these tunes. And now we are excited to be able to share both that soundtrack and film with you for the first time.

The Trip There is now available here via live downloads in a variety of formats. You can buy the movie, the soundtrack (in flac or mp3) or a bundle with both. The soundtrack contains 9 original Bayliss tracks including and 2 additional songs written and performed by Matt Curreri.  You may recognize a couple of these songs as they have been given a new life with the help of Jeff Austin and 30db. Hear these tracks and 7 new ones in their infancy, stripped down to the core for this debut soundtrack release.

Bob Lud's life was forever changed during the summer of 2002.  He moved to a new city.  He began a new career.  He fell in love with Emily, the woman of his dreams.  And, in truly unlikely fashion, she fell in love right back.  Their story, told through the interweaved record of three cross-country road trips, is attributed to the work of "the Spirit."  The Trip There attempts to witness this work through the eyes of Bob and Emily, the words of those who know and love them, and through the deeper narratives suggested by the journeys themselves.

Traversing the themes of love, travel, music, metaphysics, and more, the film illuminates the nature of human vulnerability and the capacity for transformation we all carry within us.  Without discounting the necessity of the destination, we are reminded that it is on the trip there that purpose is found. The Trip There brings us the tale of three journeys: one to find love, a second to call a storyteller, and a third to tell the story.

The Anatomy of a Sample

A while back we gave fans the opportunity to vote on a brand new cover tune for our show at Rams Head Live in Baltimore, MD.  While Prince made a run at it, Wilco's "I am trying to break your heart" was victorious by more than a few votes. While the band began working out the arrangement, I turned my attention to putting a unique auditory stamp on this classic. Wilco records are full of great production, unique sounds and general oddities so I wanted to make sure we were true to form.

I got to work piecing together a sample that would subtly weave its way in and out of our version. You can find a wealth of samples on the information super highway but loads of them are fairly one dimensional and lack much character on their own.The sum of the parts is always greater than the whole so I began gathering a variety sounds and piecing them together like a puzzle. In the end I wound up using about 9 different pieces of audio, some original recordings and some yanked straight from the interweb. A little panning, blending, and an effect here and there and voila, you have a unique piece.

Off we go on a trip through some of the pieces that I used, in the nude.

Every sample needs some good old fashioned AM static

Sonar adds a nice dimension

A jet landing provides a good balance of white noise and movement

A rhythmic element for all you finger tappers out there

Classic reel to reel camera is a must on principle alone

And what sample is complete without the ubiquitous and glorious gift from above, bacon

And now here is the actual completed sample, the puzzle complete. Can you find anything else in here?

If you want to check out the version from that Valentine's Day show you can snag it here for a whopping $.99. Listen for the sample to poke its head out at several places, some more discretely than others. Life is all about the nuance. ~ktb

Australia completed

Just wanted to share some more pictures from Australia that weren't included in the first post, including what I believe to be the first pictures on the blog taken underwater.

Ryan prepares for a dive on the Great Barrier Reef

There really is no place that you can't rock

Abundant wildlife occupies these waters

And they don't seem to mind our company

Vince cleans his dishes off the back of the boat

And chums the water for hundreds of red bass and other scavenger fish

Including lots of these guys
